The blue iris belongs to the family Iridaceae, made of around 300 species of native plants growing in the temperate zones in Europe, Asia, Africa and America. In Andorra, they can be found in both valleys. It is also known as the Blue Lily, Common Lily, Great Flame and Cardoon Lily. This flower can reach 70 centimeters high and its flowers are wide and long. They are usually purple or blue, although there are many varieties in other colors. They bloom throughout the spring and early summer and it is common to find them in wet meadows below 2,500 meters. Although abundant in areas where there is full sun exposure, they can also survive in partial shade and withstand cold and frost. Similarly, they have a preference for calcareous soils, but can thrive in any well-drained soil.
